Install an APK file

Your file

One single file. The simplest case: download, open, install.

  1. Download the fileTap the download button on the app page, wait for the countdown, then pick a link. Let it finish completely.
  2. Allow unknown sourcesSettings, Apps, Special access, Install unknown apps, then allow the browser or file manager you downloaded with.
  3. Remove the Play Store copy firstIf the same app from Google Play is still on the phone, uninstall it. Two builds signed with different keys cannot live side by side.
  4. Open the file and tap InstallFind the APK in Downloads, tap it, then confirm. A warning screen is normal for anything that did not come from the Play Store.
  5. Open the app onceMake sure it really starts. If it closes right away, read the Play Protect part below.
XAPK / APKS

Install an XAPK or APKS file

A bundle holding several APK parts. Android cannot open it alone, so an installer app is needed.

  1. Download the XAPKSave the file as it is. Renaming it to .apk converts nothing and the install will simply fail.
  2. Get an installer that reads bundlesA split bundle cannot be opened by Android alone. Use any XAPK or APKS installer, or a file manager that supports split APKs.
  3. Allow unknown sources for that installerThe permission belongs to whichever app performs the install, so grant it to the installer, not to the browser.
  4. Open the XAPK with itPick the file and let the installer unpack the parts and push them in one go. Big games can take a minute.
  5. Do not delete anything halfwayIf the installer copies out a data folder, leave it alone until the app has started once.
APK + OBB

Install an APK with an OBB data pack

A small APK plus a big data pack. The pack has to sit in the right folder before the game starts.

  1. Download both filesYou need the APK and the OBB data pack. Without the pack the game opens and closes, or asks to download again.
  2. Install the APK firstInstall it, but do not open the game yet.
  3. Unzip the pack if it is a zipInside you should find a file ending in .obb. That file is the one that matters.
  4. Put the .obb in the right folderMove it into this exact folder and create the folder if it is missing: Android/obb/com.locket.Locket
  5. Now open the gameIf it still asks to download data, the folder name or the file name is wrong. Check them character by character.
Play Protect

When Play Protect blocks the install

Play Protect scans everything that was not installed from the Play Store. A modified build is by definition not the original, so a warning is expected and does not on its own mean the file is harmful.

  1. Read the dialog carefullyOn the blocked screen tap More details, then Install anyway. The button is deliberately small.
  2. Turn the scan off for a momentPlay Store, your avatar, Play Protect, the gear icon, then switch off Scan apps with Play Protect. Turn it back on after installing.
  3. Install while offlineTurning wifi and mobile data off before installing stops the live check from running at all.
  4. Still blockedSome phone makers add a scanner of their own. Open the security app that came with the phone and allow the file there too.
Turn Play Protect back on once you are done. Leaving it off for good removes a real layer of protection from every other app on the phone.

Common errors

App not installed
Almost always an older copy of the same app is still on the phone, signed with a different key. Uninstall it, including from a second user profile or a work profile, then install again.
There was a problem parsing the package
The download is incomplete, or the file is not really an APK. Delete it, download again on a stable connection, and check the size against the one shown on the app page.
Not enough storage
Android needs room for the file, for the unpacked app and for a temporary copy while installing. Free up roughly three times the file size.
Signature does not match
A MOD is signed by whoever built it, not by the original developer, so it can never update over a Play Store copy. Uninstall the old one first, and back up your save if the app allows it.
The app opens and closes immediately
Either the data pack is missing or in the wrong folder, or the build needs a newer Android than the phone runs. Check the OBB path first, then the requirements on the app page.
The download button does nothing
An ad blocker or a very aggressive browser setting can eat the dialog. Try another browser, or wait for the countdown to finish before tapping.
